How Long Does It Take For A Blog To Be Successful?

HNTSO edit top image

Depends.
On so many things.

Depends on what you mean by successful.
Lots of readers?
Income?
A place to let off steam?

If you are looking at blogging for a possible income then you have to treat your blog like a business. Invest in it. Both time, passion and money if and when appropriate.
That applies if you are using your blog to springboard something else such as a book release or training videos e.g. yoga, makeup or cooking.

If that is the case then take the example of Victoria Beckham. People have derided her fashion business because at Companies House (the UK business registry) it was shown to be losing money year on year and being bailed out by her ex footballer husband’s money.

Well, only someone who doesn’t understand business would deride this. Her company is still fairly young. Businesses can take up to 5 to 10 years to turn things around and show a profit. That also depends on the type of business you get into. Money moves through businesses in many different ways depending on each individual set up.

Blogging (seriously, as opposed to a hobby) is much the same. You have to give it the time it needs to establish itself and that too may vary based on your topic and how hard you push it yourself.

I have seen blogs get established in literally months (I’ve seen a few quirks where they were established in a matter of days with huge traffic!) and I have also seen them climb real slowly for 3 to 4 years and then suddenly WHOOSH! A catalyst pushes it to the stratosphere… and of course  there are also those that continue to climb slowly but surely.

So the answer to How Long Does It Take For A Blog To Be Successful is ‘X’.

And X very much depends on the blogger, their choices and sometimes a fair sampling of old fashioned luck.

The one thing that IS guaranteed is that if you are not open to change where change is required, A/B test out the different paths to your goal to find what works for you, rest and reinvigorate your passion for blogging regularly, treat marketing seriously and most important stick at it, it definitely won’t be successful at any point. As with most things in life, with blogging you get back what you put in.

Shocking Video

the insanity of humanity lg

The video depicts what appears to be a re-occurring theme of the typical treatment of African maids who are forced to work in the Gulf States.

WARNING! NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED.

The video can be seen here.

When / if you view it, let me know what it makes you think or feel, because whilst it’s shocking I’m not surprised by it…which is not a good thing.

And just so you know, the dialogue is something along the lines of

‘Help me! Help me!’

‘Get up you crazy woman.’

What Say You?

Cute Dog Helps Young Boy Find His Swagger!

This is Carter Blanchard from Arkansas USA. He developed vitiligo, a skin condition that gradually makes the skin lose pigment. He is 8 years old and his skin started changing whilst at school. The young ‘in was feeling very bad about himself and had told his mother that he hated his face and hated the way he looked.

That was until he met…Rowdy!

Rowdy was rocking the same look! He developed vitiligo the same year as Carter and the two met up and became the best of buds. Rowdy is a thirteen year old pure black labrador who showed Carter that 1. he was no longer isolated and 2. the vitiligo thing… it ain’t no big deal!

Carter’s mother says that no one else could have got this message through to her son to make him feel better about himself but Rowdy. 🙂

Rowdy for president!

This Little Guy Dares You Not To Fall In Love With Him…

…So I’m minding my own business surfing on the net when I came across something very special.

It contained tiny balls of fur falling about, rolling, standing in their food, wrassling and scuttling everywhere… I started watching and as time was ticking by I resized the page and stuck it in the right hand corner of the desktop 27 incher…so I could (conceivably) carry on working…that seems like weeks or months ago now…and I’m still watching!

My new addiction is called Kitten Academy. A 24 hour live streaming of a cat foster home where you can watch kittens get born and grow into fine young kitten men and women and ‘graduate’ from the Academy once adopted.
Trust me when I say no description can do it justice. You have to go there for yourself and have your tiny hearts broken by these blessed creatures.

Tell them The Ed sent you! 🙂

You will arrive at a good time where a Superstar Kitten called Charlie was recently adopted (so you missed his graduation – a very beautiful bittersweet affair!) but a Momcat named Angel has just given birth to ‘the fishes.’ Fishes? You’ll understand eventually!

I decided to seek out the headmaster of the scholarly establishment to get some behind the scenes information…

5 Ways To Boost Your Blog Audience Right Now

HNTSO edit top imageIf you are chugging along, not happy with your audience numbers and you want to change that I’m going to give you 5 things to do right now that have worked for me in the past when I was actively growing my audience.

1. Use Twitter.

Go to Twitter put in the hashtag (keyword) that best describes what you do.
You will find a bunch of people in your niche. Follow them and start up a convo.

Don’t know how to use Twitter?
I have a post coming up just for you!

2. Use WordPress

Find a blog that is arguing a point that you are passionate about and has a lot of comments. Join in the conversation, talking to both the blogger AND their commenters. Write your own side / version of the argument / discussion on your blog. Then go mention it to the original blogger and invite them to give their point of view.
If you make a great argument or have an interesting alternate view they may mention it in their existing related post or a new post. If they do they will likely mention YOU and link to your post. Bingo!

If they don’t link to you, drop them a line and ask if they wouldn’t mind adding your link seeing as they have mentioned you anyway.

You might have to have a few goes to connect with someone of impact, but it’ll be worth it, because achieving this is fabulous in 3 ways:

1. SEO if they are a large blog.

2. It introduces you to a new (big) blogger.

3. It’s great for audience-pull generally.

Don’t know about SEO? See no. 6 below.

3. Use Google

Go to Google or use WordPress.com to find a big blog in your niche. Is there something that you can offer them by way of assistance?
I always stress that one of the biggest things people get wrong in blogging (or life!) is they come with a ‘take’ mindset instead of a ‘give’ one.

eg ‘How can I add something worthwhile to the conversation here,’ instead of ‘Support me! Do this for me! Retweet me! Give me a shout out!’

One example is where a big blogger has made a video, could you offer to type up the transcript of the video for them? This gets you onside, noticed and could serve as an unbelievable platform for you if your relationship grows. I cannot overstate how important relationships are in this game folks!

Have they made a mistake in their facts or spelling that you could (kindly) point out?

‘Hi, xxx I was just enjoying your post on xxxx. I hope you don’t mind but I saw an error and wanted to give you a heads up…’

Is there anything else you could do for someone else BEFORE you ask that THEY help you?

Maybe suggest some stuff in the comments for others if you have some ideas.

4. Set Targets

Set yourself a target number for a week. Then go meet and greet that number of people WITHOUT FAIL.
Pat yourself on the back if you manage to stick to it then repeat or admonish and clarify why you missed your goal and promise yourself you will do better next week.

5. Blog Surgery Cometh!

Book your seat for my next Blog Surgery where you can come and ask anything about your blog that might help your unique situation.
I’ll be doing an hour or so surgery, so please feel free to ask anything techie, writer-y, SEO-ey, design-ey, traffic-ey, money-ey….you get the drill!

You are invited! It’s free! Never had an unhappy customer yet!  🙂

It’ll be in about a week, so stay tuned for the solid date.

6. Join A Family To Grow A Family

(Yes I know I said 5!)

Forget all the stuff I’ve just said and cut to the chase. The The Karma Army (part of The Blogging Caucus family) can do all of that for you and more. As part of a self-encouraging network you will be helped and encouraged to get there and because most of the back-end slog is done for you it can take literally seconds to start building your own family or network!

Have a say in stating what YOU want to learn about blogging, get introduced to new supportive friends. The aim is to keep blogging and social networking fun…but very productive!

Ever tried growing a family all by yourself?! – Is it even medically possible!!? 😯

For those of you already signed up. Thank you. Sit tight. It is going to be amazing.

The March

the-march

Like something from a century ago or indeed something from quite a few current cultures, women (and men) took to the streets on Saturday 21st January in opposition to the denigration of women and a divisive US president prone to eyebrow-raising misogyny amongst other things.

The March appears to represent a fluent meaning depending on who you talk to. To some it would have elicited a rather large yawn, probably accompanied by the usual, dismissive ‘stupid feminists, what do they think they’re going to achieve?’ to ‘Trump is president – get over it!’ suggesting it’s all about election disappointment – nothing more, nothing less. To the idea that this marks a beginning of consistent opposition to the counter productive backwards steps the new American administration is seen by many to be taking.

It would be difficult to argue against that point. We have a president that does not seem to be very presidential …a tack which clearly has it’s supporters. To recap:

  • He has spoken about grabbing women ‘by the pussy.’
  • He has spoken to a woman on prime time television about ‘blood coming out of her wherever…’
  • He has recalled with pride how he would burst into the changing rooms of the women taking part in his pageants whilst they were undressing, knowing that they would not dare demand he GTFO.
  • He is embroiled in a underage sex case.
  • He has grandly marked women’s physical appearance out of 10 with zero sense of irony or self awareness.
  • He has suggested that women who are not deemed attractive by him are lying when they say they were assaulted by him, not necessarily because he didn’t do it, but because of course only attractive women get sexually assaulted.
  • He tends to forget his wife whilst embracing his new role, barging ahead of her and leaving those with manners to guide her unnecessarily but with old fashioned gentlemanly grace into position. It’s all new for her too after all.

Those are just a few things we know about.

It’s plenty.

The numbers of women (people) who marched against Donald Trump rather embarrassingly dwarfed the people who turned up for his inauguration.

So?

What does it all mean for women and for the future?

Could we really brush aside Trumps comments as his most rabid fans have done as locker room banter?
Let’s face it. He is not lying. This kind of language, behaviour and sense of entitlement goes on in male environments and occasionally spills unchecked from the mouths of even the nicest of men, possibly in the same way sexist remarks spill from the mouths of women also when they are out with the girls. The thing is…they are not the President of the United States.

The Boss Man.

When the boss picks on someone, at work, at school, even at home, it is usually a signal by the weak-minded that it is okay to do the same. See the Stanford prison experiment. Lemmings develop a gang mentality that makes them behave in ways they would not behave on their own. It is this that makes Trumps behaviour alarming for the potential victims of his throwaway, irresponsible nonsense. The rise in attacks (on either side of the argument) bear this out whilst making the protest responses to it gratifying.

The protests show little sign of ending or focussing solely on his lack of respect for women…

So, School Me…

The March…What did it mean to YOU personally?…If anything.

HNY! – Predictions For 2017

2017-predict-bkgrdwp2
1. Someone will comment on the weather, be it hot or cold and blame it on global warming.

2. Someone will plough the depths of wit and originality and accuse someone somewhere of being either a lefty liberal, a feminist, Hitler or a millennial snowflake.

3. A douchebag somewhere will harm an animal and receive zero repercussions for their actions.

4. A celebrity will die.

5. Trump will do something Trump-like. Twitter might just mention it.

6. Somebody will be terribly offended.

7. And a woman will shun those tiresome and wholly inconvenient strips of cloth they have been forced to wear for decades and finally show up at a red carpet event completely naked, citing feminism and freedom, having starved herself for 12 months beforehand.

That’s just what we see happening. We could be wrong! Flippant or serious, personal or world changing, what are YOUR predictions for 2017?
